Cement shortage to ease next month, says IMAJ

Jamaica's construction sector can anticipate a much-needed reprieve as the Incorporated Masterbuilders Association of Jamaica (IMAJ) announced assurances from Caribbean Cement Company Limited (CCCL) that the current cement shortage is expected to significantly ease within the next month. This news comes after crucial meetings where CCCL outlined the causes of the supply constraints and committed to concrete actions to restore normal production levels.

At the meeting, CCCL outlined the factors contributing to the current shortfall and provided assurances that corrective measures are underway. The company has indicated that it expects supply conditions to progressively improve over the next three weeks, with normalisation anticipated by mid-May.

CCCL has pledged to ramp up output to bridge the existing supply gap and is undertaking measures to enhance plant resilience, aiming to prevent future disruptions. The company also acknowledged the need to align its production capacity with the current high demand, which has been fueled by government initiatives like the Restoration of Owner or Occupant Family Shelters (ROOFS) program and the Tourism Housing Assistance and Recovery Program (THARP). These programs, designed to aid residents affected by hurricanes and support the tourism sector, have inadvertently increased the demand for construction materials.

In addressing the immediate challenges, CCCL has committed to increasing production output to close the current supply gap.

The IMAJ emphasized the critical role consistent cement supply plays in the smooth operation of the construction market and the wider Jamaican economy. The association will continue to monitor CCCL's progress closely. While the assurances are welcome, the ongoing tightness in the cement market, as noted by local hardware businesses, highlights the fragility of supply chains. The situation underscores the delicate balance between reconstruction efforts, ongoing development projects, and the capacity of local industries to meet demand, a challenge that resonates deeply within Jamaica's economic landscape.
