Central Java DPRD Forms Special Committee for Brebes Selatan Autonomous Region

The Central Java Provincial People's Representative Council (DPRD) has established a special committee (pansus) to scrutinize the fulfillment of requirements for the formation of a new autonomous region, tentatively named Brebes Selatan. This move follows the proposal's advancement through initial stages in the Brebes Regency government and its DPRD. Sumanto, the Chairman of the Central Java DPRD, explained that the committee's task is to verify compliance with Law Number 23 of 2014 concerning Regional Government. He emphasized that the final decision on establishing the new region rests with the central government. The Regional Secretary of Central Java, Sumarno, confirmed that the provincial government has followed up on the aspiration for Brebes Selatan. He indicated that initial assessments suggest the requirements have been met, leading the Governor to propose it for discussion with the DPRD. If approved jointly, the proposal will be forwarded to the central government for further review by an independent team. A primary driver for the proposed division is the perceived difficulty in accessing public services from the current administrative center in Brebes. Agus Sutrisno, the Presidium Chairman for the Brebes Selatan Separation, welcomed the formation of the special committee, expressing hope for a swift establishment of the new autonomous region, a goal proponents have pursued since 1957.
