Chances of Finding María Camila Potosí's 8-Month Fetus: Community Holds New Vigil in South Cali

The community in Cali, Colombia, is holding vigils and demanding answers following the brutal murder of 21-year-old María Camila Potosí and the subsequent extraction of her eight-month-old fetus. Police and the Prosecutor's Office are pursuing new leads in the disturbing case, which came to light when Potosí's family reported her missing.

Potosí disappeared on July 16 and her body was discovered four days later, on July 20, along the banks of the Meléndez River in the La Buitrera area. The circumstances surrounding the extraction of the baby from her womb are particularly alarming, raising critical questions about the viability of the infant.

Initial reports suggest the baby may not have survived due to the procedure being carried out under unsanitary and inadequate conditions. Medical experts consulted by EL TIEMPO explained that while an eight-month-old fetus (32-35 weeks) has a reasonable chance of survival as a premature infant, this is contingent on proper clinical care to manage potential complications. Immature lungs, for instance, could lead to breathing difficulties or collapse.

Adding to the distress, it remains unclear if the baby was extracted before or after Potosí's death, and the passage of time is a critical factor given the infant's need for immediate clinical attention. Security camera footage shows Potosí on July 16 as a passenger on a motorcycle driven by a woman identified as Yulieth, described as an Afro-descendant, robust, with dark braided hair. Potosí's ex-partner's family claims Yulieth had previously faked a pregnancy, with one individual, Carlos Rincón, stating Yulieth had confessed to being pregnant this year and had shown him ultrasounds and prenatal records.
