Chaos on Punta Gorda Rambla: Lanes blocked east and towards Center after traffic accident

Traffic in Montevideo's Punta Gorda neighborhood ground to a halt this Monday afternoon following a traffic accident on the Rambla República de México and José Cúneo Perinetti. The collision has completely blocked lanes heading east and towards the city center, causing considerable chaos for commuters. This incident is particularly concerning given the location's history; the Intendencia de Montevideo (IMM) installed a radar there in November 2025 precisely because of the numerous accidents, some of them fatal, that have occurred in the vicinity. Just last September, a tragic crash at the same spot claimed two lives and injured two others. The IMM has also initiated repaving work on a curve known for frequent accidents and previously addressed a dangerous street inclination. The recurring nature of these incidents underscores a persistent safety issue on this stretch of the Rambla, despite ongoing efforts by local authorities to mitigate the risks.
