Charity group rebuilds home for impoverished family in Taiwan

In Zhongpu Township, Jiayi County, Taiwan, a family struggling with poverty and disability found hope through the kindness of local charities. The Yan family, consisting of parents and their two-year-old son, faced dire living conditions after their ancestral home was severely damaged by a typhoon and earthquake. The father holds a moderate disability certificate, and the couple relies on odd jobs for income.

The association quickly integrated resources from all parties and completed the renovation project, fulfilling the association's founding purpose. We thank all kind individuals and collaborating units for their joint efforts. We hope the association continues to improve its repair services to benefit more disadvantaged families.

Their original home, a two-ping (approximately 6.5 square meters) structure converted from a pigsty, was already cramped and in disrepair. It suffered from leaks and structural instability due to past seismic activity and storms. The situation worsened when the typhoon destroyed the roof and damaged the walls, leaving the family with no choice but to squeeze into the remaining small, unsafe space.

This case was referred after an assessment by social workers from the Zhongpu Social Welfare Service Center. The county government coordinated the Hundred Craftsmen Repair Altruism Association and various resources to build a tin house for the family, provide recycled furniture, improve leaks, re-lay floor tiles, and plan an indoor bathroom, greatly enhancing the family's quality of life.

Upon learning of the family's plight, the Jiayi County government facilitated a collaboration between the Jiayi County Hundred Craftsmen Repair Altruism Association and Jiuhua Mountain Ksitigarbha Temple. These organizations, along with other benevolent individuals and businesses, pooled resources and labor. Within approximately three weeks, they successfully constructed a new tin-sheet house, complete with a renovated interior, new flooring, and an indoor bathroom, significantly improving the family's quality of life and providing them with a secure place to live.

This project received donations from Jiuhua Mountain Ksitigarbha Temple, kind enterprises, groups, and individuals. The association will uphold the spirit of professional construction and caring service to help more families in need improve their living environments.
