China vows to defend Brazil’s sovereignty as Trump’s 25% tariff bites

China has vowed to defend Brazil's sovereignty and development interests, signaling strong support amid escalating trade tensions with the United States. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed this assurance to his Brazilian counterpart, Mauro Vieira, on the sidelines of an ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Manila.

The pledge from Beijing follows the implementation of a 25% U.S. tariff on Brazilian goods. Wang described Brazil as a key emerging economy with significant global influence and a representative voice for the Global South. In return for China's support, Beijing requested that Brazil continue to respect and support China's core interests, a term Beijing uses to refer to sensitive issues like Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong.
