Chinese paratrooper killed in Qinghai exercise as Beijing acknowledges casualties

Beijing has officially acknowledged the death of a young paratrooper during a military training exercise in northwestern China, adding to a recent string of reported accidents and fatalities within the People's Liberation Army (PLA). Xia Shiyuan, 23, from Huaiyuan county in Anhui province, lost his life on May 27 following an incident shortly after departing an airborne aircraft during a scheduled exercise in Golmud, Qinghai province.

According to state media reports, Xia fell to the ground and was promptly transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at 12:32 p.m. The PLA confirmed that Xia, born in 2002 and who joined the army in 2021, was posthumously designated a martyr and awarded a third-class merit citation in June. His ashes were returned to his hometown on August 8, and he was buried with full honors at the Huaiyuan Martyrs’ Cemetery on Monday, with local authorities in attendance.

Xia's death marks one of two parachute-related incidents that have recently been disclosed by the PLA, occurring on consecutive days. While the report does not detail the second incident, the confirmation of Xia's death underscores concerns about safety protocols and training incidents within China's rapidly modernizing military. The PLA's acknowledgment of casualties, though often delayed, indicates a degree of transparency regarding the risks inherent in military operations and training.
