Historian Wang Gungwu on US Credibility and Why Xi Thinks 'Only the Party Can Save China'

Renowned historian Wang Gungwu draws parallels between the current US-China rivalry and the Cold War, noting the significant deterrent of nuclear weapons that makes direct conflict unlikely. However, he suggests that proxy conflicts, a hallmark of the Cold War, could still emerge between the two global powers.

At 95, Wang, an emeritus professor at the Australian National University and professor at the National University of Singapore, is internationally recognized for his extensive work on Chinese history and the Chinese diaspora. He previously served as vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong. In an interview for the 'Open Questions' series, Wang shared his perspective on the escalating tensions between the two nations.

Wang posits that US military strategists might adopt a strategy similar to that employed against the Soviet Union, aiming to weaken China's global influence and power through indirect means. The ideal scenario, he suggests, would be to diminish the perceived "China threat" without resorting to direct military engagement, given the inherent dangers involved.

His analysis highlights the complex geopolitical landscape, where the threat of nuclear annihilation fundamentally alters the dynamics of great power competition.
