Cicada Shell Collection Surges in Vietnam's Central Highlands Amid High Demand

A peculiar economic phenomenon is unfolding in Vietnam's Central Highlands, where the collection and sale of cicada shells have seen a dramatic increase. Locals, particularly in Gia Lai province, are venturing deep into the forests during the dry season to gather these shells, driven by a lucrative market that offers substantial prices.

Buyers are reportedly paying premium rates, with prices ranging from 2.1 to 2.2 million VND per kilogram for larger shells and approximately 600,000 to 700,000 VND for smaller ones. This high demand has spurred a "gold rush" of sorts, with collectors spending entire days in the forest for modest yields, needing to collect hundreds of shells to reach just one kilogram due to their light weight.

While the ultimate use of these cicada shells remains somewhat mysterious, they are known to be traded and transported to the northern regions of Vietnam. Local authorities, including forestry officials, are aware of the situation and are investigating the trend. Currently, the collection does not appear to violate any forestry regulations, but officials are monitoring the situation closely to understand the purpose behind the demand and ensure no environmental damage occurs. Traditional medicine practitioners note that cicada shells are considered a valuable ingredient in traditional remedies, used to treat various ailments like headaches, dizziness, and fevers.
