Coaster, Fuso collide in Doma, killing one and injuring five

A Toyota Coaster driver died at the scene and five people were injured when the minibus collided head-on with a Fuso truck in Doma, Morogoro region.

The crash happened at dawn on Sept. 7 on the Morogoro-Iringa road. Morogoro Regional Police Commander Andrew Kantimbo identified the dead driver as 30-year-old Joackim Lunyungu, a Dar es Salaam resident. His body was taken to Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital, pending identification by relatives and other family procedures.

Police said the injured included Fuso driver Japhet John Masera, 48, as well as Jofrey Japhet, 23, Nico Patrick, 38, Dorcas Payovela, 6, and Jane Mshumbuzi, 36, a farmer from Ifakara. They were admitted to the same hospital for examinations and treatment. Hospital officials said they had begun receiving tests and medical care and that their conditions were improving.

Police attributed the crash to negligence by the Coaster driver, who allegedly attempted to overtake other vehicles without taking proper precautions. Rescue team leader Alexander Makuluni said rescuers reached the scene after receiving a call and found three injured people trapped underneath the vehicles. They administered first aid before taking them to hospital. Police urged drivers to obey traffic laws and road safety signs to prevent crashes that can be avoided.
