Commonwealth Games 2026: Amadu Mohammed Reaches Quarter-Finals in Boxing

Ghana's Amadu Mohammed has secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the boxing event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Competing in the men's bantamweight 55kg category, Mohammed defeated Eriu Temakau from Kiribati at the SEC Hall 5.

The contest was stopped by Polish referee Artur Goluch at 1:54 into the bout, handing the Ghanaian a decisive victory. Mohammed, who received a bye in the Round of 32, faced Temakau, who had won his previous match via a split decision. The Ghanaian boxer, a gold medalist at the 13th African Games, dominated the fight, landing powerful left hooks after effective jabs.

Mohammed will next face England's Ellis Trowbridge for a chance to reach the semi-finals and contend for a medal. The Ghanaian contingent has several other boxers competing in different weight classes. Ebenezer Ankrah in the men's 60kg, Precious Akai Nettey in the men's 70kg, and Desmond Pappoe in the men's 80kg are all set for their Round of 16 bouts. Ramatu Quaye will compete in the women's 51kg Round of 16, while Jibril Muntari and Daniel Plange will fight in their respective quarter-final bouts on Friday and Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Abdul Wahid Omar, captain of the Black Bombers, was eliminated from the men's 65kg event after a unanimous points defeat to England's Patris Mughalzai in the Round of 32. Omar suffered a knockdown and lost all three rounds on the judges' scorecards.
