Company in García, Nuevo León, suspended amid investigation into industrial chemical spills

The municipality of García, Nuevo León, has taken decisive action by suspending the operations of the company COMPLEX located in the Parque Industrial Mitras. This move comes after a year-long period of persistent citizen complaints about chemical odors, prompting a coordinated effort by various municipal departments, including Urban Development, Civil Protection, and the Environmental Guard.

Inspectors from Urban Development ultimately found sufficient grounds within the municipality's jurisdiction to enforce the suspension. This action is intended to mitigate health risks associated with the suspected leaks or spills of industrial chemicals, such as acid gas, hydrochloric acid, and caustic soda, which have been reported by residents and confirmed through preliminary investigations. The municipal government has also formally requested intervention from state and federal authorities, acknowledging that the environmental and regulatory aspects of the issue may extend beyond local control.

Mayor Manuel Guerra Cavazos emphasized that this suspension is a significant step but not the final resolution. The municipality's intelligence team, Civil Protection, and citizen reports have been crucial in documenting the problem. While partial evacuations were initiated in a nearby facility during a recent incident to prevent intoxication, no injuries were reported. This case highlights the challenges faced by local governments in addressing industrial pollution, especially when dealing with complex chemical substances and inter-agency coordination, underscoring the importance of citizen vigilance and robust municipal oversight.
