Concepción Celebrates 253 Years, Eyes Future as Paraguay's Development Hub

The city of Concepción, the capital of Paraguay's first department, marked its 253rd anniversary on May 25th with a commemorative ceremony held at the municipal theater. Students from José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia school recreated the founding of the Villa Real de la Concepción on May 25, 1773.

Municipal Mayor Bernardo Villalba Ayala emphasized the advancements made in the departmental capital, attributing them to investments from national, departmental, and municipal governments, alongside private enterprises. He expressed confidence that Concepción is poised to become Paraguay's next development hub. "Concepción is not just a point on the map; it is a feeling, a heritage, a commitment," stated cultural manager Mónica Mareco Casey in her address, urging unity beyond the celebration.

Villalba acknowledged that significant challenges remain, particularly in developing the city's riverfront along the Paraguay River, which he believes will attract tourism and transform the city's landscape. The anniversary celebrations are scheduled to continue throughout the week with various events.

Upcoming activities include "Matices del Norte" on Tuesday, featuring art and book exhibitions, instrumental music, and an artisan fair. Wednesday will see the presentation of the zarzuela "La página rota. Lo que no pudieron callar" at the municipal theater. A family farming fair is scheduled for Thursday, followed by the launch of Expo Concepción and a basketball tournament on Friday. The festivities will conclude on Sunday with the traditional civic, student, police, and military parade.
