Court Grants Ex-Kaduna Governor El-Rufai Access to Medical Care in Custody

In a significant development, the Federal High Court in Kaduna has ruled in favor of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, granting him access to essential medical care while he remains in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). This decision comes amidst El-Rufai's ongoing trial on a 10-count charge related to alleged money laundering and corruption offenses.

The court's directive, issued by Justice Rilwan Aikawa, mandates that the ICPC must facilitate El-Rufai's access to specialized dental and eye treatment at designated facilities in Abuja. This access is to be provided under strict supervision, with El-Rufai to be returned to custody immediately after his appointments. The ruling followed a compassionate plea made by El-Rufai's defense counsel during the court proceedings.

El-Rufai and his co-defendant, Joel Adoga, have pleaded not guilty to all charges. The trial centers on allegations of conversion and possession of proceeds of corruption, as well as money laundering, contrary to the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. The court had previously admitted El-Rufai to bail under specific conditions, including a N200 million bond with two sureties.

The ICPC, through its spokesman John Odey, stated its commitment to complying with the court's orders while maintaining lawful custody of the defendant. This legal maneuver highlights the intersection of legal proceedings and personal well-being, ensuring that defendants receive necessary medical attention even while facing serious charges. The matter has been adjourned to May 7, 2026, for a ruling on an application seeking variation of El-Rufai's bail conditions.
