Croatia's national water polo team concluded the World Cup in Sydney in seventh place, a result that, despite appearances, is not considered a disappointment. This achievement was accomplished by a significantly youthful squad, primarily the U-20 national team, supplemented by a handful of younger senior players.

The team's main objective for this tournament was to gain crucial experience ahead of the U-20 European Championship scheduled for the following month in Varna. Coach Zoran Bajić emphasized the importance of exposing the young players to an environment with top international stars and a high level of competition. "Our goal was primarily to gain experience for what awaits us next month at the European Championship in Varna. The second goal was for our young players, who were playing against some big stars for the first time, to feel such an atmosphere and level of competition," Bajić stated.

During the competition, Croatia faced formidable opponents, including Hungary, the current world and European runner-up, and Spain, the reigning world champions. Although they lost to Hungary 11:16 and Spain 14:18, the team demonstrated resilience. Vlaho Pavlić was a standout scorer against Spain, netting seven goals. The team secured their seventh-place finish by convincingly defeating Georgia 18:12, with Pavlić and Brubnjak each scoring four goals.

Bajić expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, noting their bravery and skill. "We played two very good games against Hungary and Spain and showed that our game has a head and a tail. Against Georgia, we played three excellent quarters, and then there was a relaxation that I didn't particularly like," he commented. He attributed this lapse to the young players' inexperience and eagerness to prove themselves, acknowledging that such moments are part of their development.
