Customs and Police Foil Foreign Pilot's 26kg Ecstasy Smuggling Attempt at Soekarno-Hatta Airport

Authorities at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport have foiled an attempt by a Malaysian pilot to smuggle a significant quantity of narcotics into Indonesia. The pilot, identified by the initials MS, was arrested on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, while carrying 70,114 ecstasy pills, totaling 26 kilograms, and 4 grams of methamphetamine.

The arrest occurred after customs officials flagged a suspicious suitcase belonging to MS, who was wearing a pilot's uniform, via an X-ray scan. A subsequent search by customs and the National Police's Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim Polri) revealed the drugs concealed within the suitcase and a bag.

During initial questioning, MS reportedly admitted to being paid 50,000 Malaysian Ringgit to transport the drugs to Jakarta. He also stated that he had previously carried narcotics twice, once to Sabah and once to Jakarta, in a prior, unhindered shipment. Authorities are continuing to investigate the network involved and the identity of the intended recipient in Jakarta.

Customs Director General Djaka Budhi Utama highlighted the importance of inter-agency cooperation in combating evolving drug smuggling methods. The successful operation is estimated to have prevented the misuse of drugs by over 130,000 people and averted potential social and economic losses amounting to approximately 207.9 billion Indonesian Rupiah (around $14 million USD).
