Daniel Kinahan arrested after extradition from Dubai to face organized crime charges

Alleged cartel leader Daniel Kinahan has been arrested and charged with serious organized crime offenses after being extradited from Dubai to Ireland. An Air Corps flight carrying Kinahan landed in Dublin shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.

A Garda statement confirmed the arrest, describing Kinahan as a male in his late 40s. He was apprehended in the United Arab Emirates based on an arrest warrant issued by Irish courts and extradited following a judicial process there, facilitated by the Irish Air Corps. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly stated, "This arrest shows our determination, along with our international policing partners including Dubai Police, to target transnational organized crime groups."

Kinahan, 49, is expected to face a charge of directing organized crime when he appears before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin. This extradition marks the first time an individual has been extradited from the UAE to the Republic of Ireland under a new, permanent treaty that came into force last year. His associate, Sean McGovern, was previously extradited from the UAE under a special arrangement and has since been sentenced to 24 years for directing the Kinahan cartel's criminal activities.

A significant security operation, involving armed gardaí from specialist units, was in place for Kinahan's arrival and transport to the Criminal Courts of Justice. This extradition follows years of investigation into his alleged activities by the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau. Senior Garda members and government ministers engaged in diplomatic efforts with UAE counterparts to establish the extradition treaty.
