Daniel Kinahan charged with directing organised crime at the Special Criminal Court

Daniel Kinahan, 49, stood before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin on Sunday evening to answer a charge of directing organized crime. His appearance followed his extradition from the United Arab Emirates earlier that day, marking the first time an Irish citizen has been extradited from the UAE.

Kinahan, a father of five, had been held in Dubai since his arrest in April. This followed an extradition request from Irish authorities after the Director of Public Prosecutions directed that he face the charge. His extradition case proceeded through the courts, concluding late last month.

An Air Corps flight carrying Kinahan landed at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, Co. Dublin, shortly after 6:30 p.m. He was arrested upon arrival for charging purposes and transported to the courthouse in Dublin's north inner city via a Garda convoy. A security operation, including a circling Garda helicopter and rolling road closures, accompanied his transfer.

A crowd gathered at Baldonnel to witness his departure from the Defense Forces airport, while another group assembled around the Criminal Courts of Justice (CCJ). Kinahan's hearing was the sole activity in the complex, drawing a significant presence of journalists and gardaí, many from the Garda's Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, which has investigated Kinahan. Some members of the public were also admitted to the court after queuing, presenting identification, and undergoing searches.
