Delailasakau Remembers Victims of 1999 Air Fiji Crash

The community of Delailasakau came together to honor the memory of the 17 passengers and crew members lost in the Air Fiji Flight PC121 crash 27 years ago. The annual commemoration, held on the anniversary of the tragedy, serves as a solemn occasion to remember those who perished.

On July 24, 1999, Pacific Sun Flight PC121 crashed into the hills of Mataicicia, Delailasakau in Naitasiri, claiming the lives of all 17 individuals on board. The annual Delailasakau Day commemoration is a vital tradition for the community, bringing residents together to reflect on the past and celebrate their resilience.

This year's event was led by Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Filipo Tarakinikini, who conducted a wreath-laying ceremony. Inspector of Police Paulino Wakanini represented the Fiji Police Force at the solemn gathering. The commemoration not only honors the victims but also strengthens the bonds within the Delailasakau community.

The event concluded with a "soli," a traditional community contribution, with the proceeds designated for the construction of the new St Francis of Assisi Church in Delailasakau Village. This act of remembrance is intertwined with a forward-looking initiative, demonstrating the community's enduring spirit and commitment to rebuilding and unity.
