Drizzle to continue on Peru's coast until August 19 due to atmospheric conditions

Light rains are expected to persist along Peru's coast until August 19, according to the National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi). The phenomenon is attributed to a combination of atmospheric conditions, including increased winds along the coast that are directing moisture inland.

This helps to concentrate humidity along the entire Peruvian coast, and thus, we have some quite intense drizzles in some sectors like Lima Sur and a large part of the southern coast of our Peru.

Erick Rojas, an engineer at Senamhi, explained that these winds favor the concentration of humidity along the entire Peruvian coastline. This has resulted in persistent drizzle in several districts, particularly in Lima Sur and other parts of the southern coast. Senamhi has issued an alert confirming that the DANA Aníbal system is contributing to these intense drizzles along the southern coast.

Mainly what DANA Aníbal contributes, in this case for the coast, is that it slightly increases the wind speed.

The DANA Aníbal system plays a key role by increasing wind speed, which, when combined with the directional winds towards the coast, enhances moisture concentration. However, Rojas noted that the DANA is not the sole factor. The current winter season and the ongoing El Niño Costero phenomenon, characterized by elevated sea temperatures, are also contributing significant extra moisture.

With the context of El Niño Costero and having the sea warm, we have an extra contribution of humidity.

These combined conditions led to notable precipitation levels, with Villa María del Triunfo recording 7.2 millimeters and Las Palmas station registering 2.3 millimeters on a recent Saturday. While rains are expected to continue, Senamhi anticipates that future precipitation in Lima will generally be of lower intensity, lighter, and more localized, with Lima Sur remaining the area most likely to experience them.
