Drug Trafficking Ring Busted in Athens; Suspects Hid Drugs in Plant Pot

A targeted police operation in the Exarcheia neighborhood of Athens has led to the dismantling of a drug trafficking ring, resulting in the arrest of five individuals, including four foreign nationals and one Greek woman. The suspects, aged between 23 and 35, are accused of operating as an organized gang, dealing in narcotics with the aim of illicit financial gain. Their alleged criminal activities extend to facing charges of violence against public officials and judicial officers, underscoring the dangerous nature of their operations.

The police operation, conducted on Friday, followed an intensive preliminary investigation and the utilization of intelligence regarding an organized group using an apartment in Exarcheia as their base. This apartment was placed under discreet surveillance, which allowed officers to identify the individuals involved and confirm their criminal activities. The gang employed two primary methods for drug distribution: one involved a continuous flow of individuals visiting the apartment throughout the day for short transactions, while the other saw members moving together to the Lofos Strefi area, taking anti-surveillance measures.

The 35-year-old Greek woman is believed to have been instrumental in transporting the drugs, carrying them in a handbag and distributing them in the wider area. During the search of the apartment, authorities seized 21.3 grams of cannabis, seven ecstasy pills, numerous mobile phones, and a sum of money. Significantly, in a common area of a building, 47.6 grams of processed cannabis were discovered buried in a plant pot. Additionally, three precision electronic scales were found hidden in a fence railing near the drug distribution point in Lofos Strefi. The arrested individuals have been handed over to the competent prosecutor for further legal proceedings. This bust highlights the ongoing efforts by Greek authorities to combat drug trafficking in urban centers like Athens.
