Drunk Driver Numbers Are Shocking: They Get Behind the Wheel Even When They Can No Longer Stand

The recent May 1st holiday weekend proved to be a stark reminder of the persistent problem of drunk driving in Lithuania, as police reported a disturbing number of offenders. The statistics are alarming, with individuals getting behind the wheel despite being heavily intoxicated, some to the point of being unable to stand. This reckless behavior poses a grave danger not only to the drivers themselves but to all road users.

Across various regions, law enforcement officers encountered drivers with extremely high blood alcohol content. In Vilnius, multiple arrests were made, including a 33-year-old driver with 1.88 promille and others with levels of 1.75 and 1.56 promille. The situation was particularly dire in Kaunas, where a 27-year-old driver registered a critical 3.00 promille, reportedly struggling to stay on his feet. Other incidents involved drivers in Biržai, Klaipėda, Ukmergė, Plungė, and Vilnius, with blood alcohol levels consistently exceeding legal limits, some reaching over 3.20 promille.

These cases are not mere statistics; they represent a serious disregard for the law and public safety. Drivers face potential penalties ranging from substantial fines and arrest to imprisonment for up to one year, along with the confiscation of their vehicles.
