Eala Ousts Naomi Osaka, Sets Up Washington Final Clash with Pegula

Filipino tennis player Alexandra Eala has advanced to the final of the Washington Open, securing a significant victory over Japan's Naomi Osaka. Eala, currently ranked world number 28, defeated the higher-ranked Osaka (world number 13) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, in a match lasting 1 hour and 16 minutes.

This marks Eala's second career final and her first on a hard court. Her previous final appearance was in Eastbourne in 2025, where she lost to Australia's Maya Joint. Regardless of the outcome, Eala is guaranteed to reach at least world number 23, a new career-high ranking. A victory in the final could see her climb into the Top 20.

Eala's opponent in the final will be American Jessica Pegula, the current world number 3 and the 2019 champion of the Washington tournament. Pegula reached the final by defeating Russia's Diana Schneider in her semifinal match. The two players have met once before, in the semifinals of the WTA 1000 Miami in 2025, with Pegula winning in three sets.

Eala's path to the final included a strong performance against Osaka, where she capitalized on Osaka's errors, including five double faults in the second set. Eala secured four breaks of serve throughout the match. Reflecting on her performance, Eala stated, "I think, the way I approached today's match, I knew I couldn't underestimate her. I had to be very focused and I made sure I was, which is why I'm still in the match. I need time to process it."
