Eetu Liukas Returns to SM-liiga, Signs Two-Year Deal with HIFK

Helsingin Sanomat reports on a significant acquisition for the Finnish ice hockey club HIFK, announcing the signing of 23-year-old forward Eetu Liukas to a two-year contract. This move signals Liukas's return to the SM-liiga after a three-year stint in North America, where he played in the AHL for the Bridgeport Islanders.

During his time in the AHL, Liukas appeared in 123 games, accumulating 13 goals and 15 assists. He is a product of the TPS junior system and made his SM-liiga debut in the 2019-2020 season. He also represented Finland internationally, debuting for the national team in 2022. The New York Islanders drafted him in the 157th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, though he has yet to play in the NHL.

HIFK's head coach, Olli Jokinen, expressed optimism about the signing. He described Liukas as a "young player progressing in his career" who is returning to Finland to develop further and compete for a place on the national team. Jokinen believes Liukas has the potential and ambition to eventually return to North America and make an impact in the NHL.
