EU approves 75 million euro state aid for Oldenburg stadium

The European Commission has given the green light to a 75 million euro German state aid package for the construction and operation of a new stadium in Oldenburg. The commission confirmed that the funding complies with EU regulations on state aid, ensuring no distortion of competition within the EU market.

The planned arena will feature 10,604 seats and standing places, with the potential to expand its capacity to 15,000 spectators. While primarily intended for the regional football club VfB Oldenburg, the stadium will also accommodate other sporting events, such as American football and equestrian tournaments, as well as cultural activities like concerts.

According to the commission's statement, the project aims to foster the region's economic development and support sports, cultural, and social activities. The aid is deemed necessary because sufficient private funding for the venture was unavailable. The funds will be channeled to a company wholly owned by the city of Oldenburg, which has estimated the construction costs at 57.3 million euros. Construction is slated to begin in the summer of 2027, with completion expected by late 2028 or early 2029.
