EU Cautions on War, Power Politics, and Instability

The European Union has issued a stark warning about the fragility of the rules-based international order, citing the escalating global conflicts and intense geopolitical rivalries that are undermining stability. Speaking at the Europe Day reception in Suva, EU Ambassador to the Pacific, Barbara Plinkert, pointed to the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East as prime examples of the threats facing the world.

Ambassador Plinkert emphasized that in an era defined by conflict, hybrid threats, and economic coercion, unity is paramount for peace, stability, and upholding international law. She stressed that security is a shared responsibility, and collaborative efforts are essential for building a safer world for everyone. The Ambassador noted that these global challenges are being felt worldwide, including in the Pacific region, and that international law itself is facing increasing pressure.

In a world marked by conflict, hybrid threats and economic coercion, now is the time more than ever to stand united for peace, stability and international law. Indeed, our security is a shared security and by working together we build a safer world for all.

Despite the global uncertainties, EU-Pacific relations continue to deepen, with a strong focus on shared priorities such as climate change and ocean governance. The successful adoption of the high seas treaty, supported by both Pacific nations and the EU, was highlighted as a significant achievement in protecting marine ecosystems. Furthermore, growing economic ties were underscored by the first EU-Pacific Business Forum, which aimed to foster new trade and investment opportunities. Global Gateway projects are also supporting key developments in renewable energy, digital connectivity, and infrastructure across the region.

The partnership between the EU and the Pacific aligns with the region's 2050 Blue Pacific Strategy, reflecting a mutual commitment to shared priorities. Ambassador Plinkert reaffirmed the EU's dedication to a robust, long-term partnership grounded in multilateralism and collective security. The strong support from Pacific Island countries for Ukraine's sovereignty in multilateral forums has further bolstered cooperation with the European Union.
