EU nears common stance on US trade deal, seeks reaction tools

As the European Union moves closer to solidifying its common stance on the crucial trade agreement with the United States, there is a palpable sense of urgency and strategic maneuvering within Brussels. Sabine Weyand, the outgoing Director-General for Trade at the European Commission, has expressed confidence that a unified position will be reached, emphasizing the EU's readiness to "react" to any transatlantic volatility.

However, the path forward is not without its complexities. Members of the European Parliament are pushing for robust safeguards, essentially an "off-switch" for the agreement, should the US, under President Donald Trump, decide to impose new tariffs on European goods. This demand reflects a broader concern among some member states, like France and Spain, about maintaining European economic sovereignty and the ability to respond decisively to protectionist measures.
