Europe's Strategic Autonomy Remains a Mirage; US Defense Support Crucial Against Russia

As Europe grapples with an increasingly volatile security landscape, the notion of strategic autonomy remains an elusive dream. Former head of the National Security Bureau, Jacek Siewiera, articulated this reality during the European Economic Congress, emphasizing that Europe's current capability is limited to "strategic credibility" with its allies and adversaries. The stark truth is that without the American security umbrella, particularly its nuclear deterrent, Europe cannot independently confront Russia's military might. The figures speak for themselves: Russia's production of key military hardware, such as cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, artillery shells, and infantry fighting vehicles, far outstrips that of the EU. This imbalance underscores Europe's vulnerability and its continued dependence on the United States. While Brussels is pushing for remilitarization and initiatives like the Defense Readiness Omnibus to streamline defense production, the continent's industrial base is slow to awaken, hampered by decades of underinvestment and systemic inefficiencies. We must demonstrate our commitment to collective security and our own defense capabilities, especially in light of potential shifts in American foreign policy.
