European NGO Report Flags Press Freedom Restrictions in Romania

The Civil Liberties Union for Europe's latest report paints a concerning picture of press freedom across the European Union, and Romania is unfortunately no exception. While the current government publicly committed to transparency, its actions, such as barring photojournalists from covering the beginning of government sessions, directly contradict this promise. This ban, maintained despite protests from media organizations, significantly hinders the visual documentation of government activities. The report also points to instances where individual politicians have obstructed journalists' access to information, refused to answer questions, and boycotted press conferences. A particularly egregious example involved the head of the POT party calling the police on journalists legitimately present in a parliamentary area, treating their work as a disturbance rather than a fundamental right. Such actions undermine the public's right to know and create a chilling effect on investigative journalism. From our perspective at Adevărul, these developments are deeply troubling and demand a strong response to uphold the principles of a free and independent press in Romania.
