F1 returns to Sepang?

The prospect of Formula 1 cars roaring back to the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) has brightened, as the Malaysian government confirmed receiving preliminary information about a proposal to host the high-profile race.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari, stated that both the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) have been briefed on the possibility. However, all aspects related to hosting the event are still under thorough review. KBS is engaged in comprehensive discussions to assess the proposal's suitability before any decision is made.

"The Prime Minister and the Ministry of Youth and Sports have received initial information regarding the possibility of hosting the Formula 1 (F1) race at the Sepang International Circuit to replace the Bahrain F1 race," he said in a statement. "Discussions and reviews are actively underway. KBS remains committed to supporting the development of national sports, including motorsports, and any developments will be announced after finalization."

The proposal emerged following the cancellation of the Bahrain Grand Prix, reportedly due to safety risks amid ongoing conflict in the West Asia region. This situation has opened the door for several countries to offer themselves as replacement venues. Malaysia is reportedly among the most potential candidates, with Sepang holding advantages in logistics, world-class facilities, and its successful track record as an F1 host for nearly two decades.

Malaysia last hosted the F1 Grand Prix on October 1, 2017. The circuit, which began hosting F1 in 1999, has often received praise from drivers and teams for its technical design and modern facilities. The race was discontinued after 2017 due to commercial factors and high hosting costs. The opportunity for F1 to return to Sepang is now closer if all negotiations reach an agreement.
