FBI arrests woman accused of plotting NY State Capitol bombing for ISIS

The FBI has arrested a 35-year-old woman from Albany, New York, on suspicion of plotting a bombing attack against the New York State Capitol and pledging allegiance to ISIS. Jessica Bowie was taken into custody on Wednesday and faces charges of attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.

According to court documents, the investigation began in July when authorities detected online activity indicating support for terrorism and an intent to carry out an attack. The documents allege that Bowie visited the State Capitol at least five times, taking photographs and surveying the premises. She was also reportedly seeking information on how to construct an explosive device, purchasing materials, and attempting to acquire weapons and ammunition.

Authorities believe Bowie's intended target was the Capitol building when state senators would be present, aiming to cause maximum casualties. She had also reportedly considered attacks on other locations, including Times Square and the White House. The FBI successfully disrupted the plot by engaging Bowie through individuals who posed as ISIS members but were, in fact, cooperating with the FBI as part of the operation.

Bowie allegedly received a weapon and an explosive device from these individuals, which had been controlled and provided by law enforcement. New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated that there is no immediate threat and that security measures have been enhanced at government facilities, including the Capitol. The operation highlights the FBI's counter-terrorism efforts and the use of undercover tactics to prevent attacks.
