Fire in Arta: Situation improved in Kompoti, battle to extinguish scattered hotspots continues

A fire erupted Thursday afternoon in the municipality of Nikolaos Skoufas in Arta, Greece, specifically in the Kompoti area. The situation showed improvement shortly before sunset, though firefighters continue to battle scattered hotspots.

The fire began in a landfill and quickly spread due to strong winds, prompting authorities to issue protective guidance to residents via the 112 emergency system. The Fire Service responded immediately, deploying units from Arta and Amfilochia to the scene.

Over 97 firefighters, supported by 28 water vehicles, 15 members of ground units, and aerial assets, are engaged in the operation. Additionally, five water tankers from local municipalities and the Epirus region, along with 10 earth-moving machines, are assisting in the efforts. The terrain is described as difficult, with limited rural roads, complicating firefighting.

The fire front expanded significantly, creating dispersed hotspots. According to the mayor of Nikolaos Skoufas, Kostas Papasiouzos, crops, olive groves, and livestock units have been reduced to ash. He reported that the fire had dangerously approached the settlements of Kompoti and Sellades at one point, but the risk was averted thanks to the effectiveness of aerial means. The battle continues to extinguish the remaining scattered embers, and elderly residents and individuals with respiratory issues who were evacuated due to smoke will remain at a hotel until deemed safe.
