Flames approach cities: Evacuations in Europe reach unprecedented scale

Wildfires are raging across southwestern France, forcing the evacuation of over 220,000 people and stretching firefighting resources to their limits. The inferno, described as "extremely violent and unpredictable," has generated its own winds and is advancing erratically, pushing flames towards Bordeaux. The French military has been mobilized to aid firefighters in clearing vegetation and creating firebreaks.

In Spain, the situation is also dire, with over 90,000 people evacuated from regions around Madrid and Ávila. A man died in a wildfire in the Valencia region, found in a car in a ditch. Authorities have ordered new evacuations near Toledo as fires continue to spread.

Combined, more than 300,000 people have fled their homes in France and Spain due to the persistent blazes, exacerbated by strong winds and high temperatures. While changing weather conditions have aided firefighters near Madrid, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez acknowledged that "difficult times are expected."

Italy is also experiencing over 350 fires, with 10 major ones on Sicily requiring evacuations. Scotland is battling a significant wildfire as well. The scale of the fires in France is unprecedented in peacetime civilian evacuations.
