Former commune land official detained for asset misappropriation

In a move that underscores the ongoing efforts to combat corruption and ensure accountability in public service, the police in Hai Phong City have taken a significant step by detaining Vu Ba Doat, a former land official. This action follows an investigation into allegations of asset misappropriation, a serious offense that erodes public trust.

According to reports from the Hai Phong City Police, Mr. Doat, who previously served as a land official in Luong Dien commune, is accused of exploiting his position. It is alleged that he accepted substantial payments from citizens for the legalization of land plots, even though these plots did not yet meet the criteria for receiving official land-use certificates. This practice, if proven, represents a clear abuse of power and a betrayal of the public's trust.

The investigation reveals that Mr. Doat received 250 million Vietnamese dong (approximately $9,800 USD) out of an agreed total of 500 million dong (approximately $19,600 USD). He promised to expedite the process within four months but failed to deliver, instead diverting the entire sum for his personal use and leaving him unable to reimburse the affected residents. The case has now been transferred to the City's Investigation Police Agency for further inquiry and legal proceedings.
