Former police station site in Seoul to become library and public housing complex

Seoul is embarking on an ambitious project to transform the former Geumcheon Police Station site in Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, into a vibrant cultural hub and much-needed residential space. This development, slated for completion in 2029, signifies a forward-thinking approach to urban planning, integrating essential public services with affordable housing.

The new complex, rising 20 stories, will house a comprehensive public library from its lower levels, designed to be a cornerstone of community learning and engagement. Its upper floors will provide 276 public housing units, including the "Mirinae House" initiative, specifically tailored for young couples and singles. This dual-purpose design addresses two critical urban needs: access to knowledge and resources, and the provision of stable, affordable housing.

As highlighted by Kim Tae-hee, head of Seoul's Culture Division, the Gwanak library is envisioned as more than just a building; it's intended to be a landmark that enhances the quality of life for residents in the southwestern part of the city, an area noted for its relative lack of cultural infrastructure. This project aligns with Seoul's broader strategy to establish six major regional libraries by 2033, ensuring equitable access to cultural facilities across the metropolis. The thoughtful separation of access points for the library and residential areas further emphasizes a commitment to both public convenience and resident privacy, creating a harmonious living and learning environment.
