French national shows hantavirus symptoms on return from affected cruise ship

A concerning situation has emerged involving a French national who has shown symptoms of hantavirus after being repatriated from a cruise ship that experienced an outbreak of the disease. The passenger was on a chartered flight from Tenerife to Paris, prompting immediate action from French authorities. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed that the individual, along with four others evacuated from the MV Hondius, has been placed in strict isolation.

The cruise ship, which had anchored off the Canary Islands, is the source of the outbreak. More than 90 tourists are being ferried home, but the situation has been overshadowed by the deaths of three passengers. Investigations have confirmed that two of these individuals had contracted the hantavirus, raising serious public health concerns.

Upon arrival at Le Bourget Airport in Paris, officials equipped with personal protective equipment met the French passengers. Ambulances then transported them to the Bichat hospital for a comprehensive assessment and a mandatory 72-hour quarantine. Following this period, they will be sent home to self-isolate for an additional 45 days, as per the directive from France's Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

Similarly, 14 Spanish nationals who were also flown from Tenerife to Madrid are now undergoing mandatory quarantine at a military hospital. This coordinated response highlights the international cooperation and stringent health protocols being implemented to manage the potential spread of the virus and protect public health following this unsettling incident at sea.
