Fujimori and Orsi to advance agenda focused on fighting crime

Peru's President-elect Keiko Fujimori and Uruguay's President Yamandú Orsi have agreed to prioritize an agenda focused on combating organized crime during a meeting in Lima. The discussion, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Palacio de Torre Tagle, also emphasized technological innovation, technical cooperation, and strengthening trade and investments.

The meeting highlighted the bicentennial of diplomatic relations between Peru and Uruguay, with both leaders stressing their governments' commitment to tackling transnational organized crime. Orsi's visit to Lima was for Fujimori's presidential inauguration, where he joined a number of other regional heads of state.

Fujimori, who won the presidency on her fourth attempt, secured victory by a slim margin of less than 50,000 votes. Her inauguration is set to bring the fujimorismo political movement back to power in Peru, approximately 26 years after former President Alberto Fujimori resigned amid a major corruption scandal. The event drew several regional leaders, including Argentina's President Javier Milei and Spain's King Felipe VI.
