FundéuRAE Offers Writing Guidance for Badminton World Championships

As the BWF World Championships approach in New Delhi, the Foundation of Urgent Spanish (FundéuRAE) has released a set of writing guidelines to ensure clarity and correctness in Spanish reporting. The foundation, a collaboration between the EFE news agency and the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), aims to standardize terminology related to the event.

A primary recommendation concerns the spelling of the host city: "Nueva Deli" is preferred over "Nueva Delhi." The foundation also advises using the Spanish article "la India" when referring to the country hosting the tournament.

Regarding the sport itself, FundéuRAE stresses the correct spelling of "bádminton," emphasizing the accent on the 'a' and the absence of a 'g.' It notes that alternative spellings like "badmington" are incorrect. The term "badmintonista" is deemed acceptable for a player, similar to "tenista" or "futbolista."

The guidelines also address various game formats and terms. For instance, the five modalities are "individual masculino," "individual femenino," "dobles masculinos," "dobles femeninos," and "dobles mixtos." Spanish terms like "volante," "gallito," or "pluma" are recommended over the English "shuttlecock" or "shuttle." Similarly, "empuñadura" or "agarre" are suggested alternatives to the English "grip."

Furthermore, FundéuRAE clarifies that "juego" or "set" are preferred over the English "game" for winning a round, and "punto de partido" is the correct Spanish equivalent for "match point." The foundation also provides guidance on naming specific strokes, recommending lowercase for Spanish terms and italics or quotes for foreign ones, citing official badminton federation glossaries.
