Golders Green stabbing declared terrorist incident; suspect had prior altercation

The Counter Terrorism Police in the UK are leading the investigation into a deeply concerning stabbing incident in Golders Green, north London, which has been declared a terrorist act. Two Jewish men were attacked, with one, Shilome Rand, describing the harrowing experience of being stabbed shortly after leaving his synagogue. He recounted the fear gripping the community, with residents feeling unsafe walking the streets and blaming the government for perceived inaction.

This fellow came towards me and just stabbed me in the chest… I jumped back, so thankfully it was only one stab. It could have taken my life.

Scotland Yard confirmed the 45-year-old suspect is a British national with Somali origins. Authorities are actively searching an address in south-east London and investigating a separate incident reported earlier the same day. In that earlier incident, the suspect is believed to have had an altercation with an occupant at an address in Great Dover Street, Southwark, before fleeing. The occupant sustained minor injuries.

All afternoon I've had calls and texts coming in, people are really afraid, people are uncomfortable walking in the streets. People are blaming obviously the Government. You know they aren’t doing anything about what’s going on for the past few months. Really our community is suffering from these kind of attacks and now they’re trying to take people’s lives.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley stated the suspect has a history of serious violence. Footage circulating online shows the moments leading up to the attack and the subsequent apprehension of the suspect by officers, who used a Taser and physical force. A member of the public also assisted in the arrest. The incident has understandably shaken the local Jewish community, highlighting ongoing fears about security and the rise of antisemitism. The swift response and declaration of a terrorist incident underscore the seriousness with which such attacks are treated.
