Greece prioritizes safety for Gaza aid flotilla participants after Israeli forces attack

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs has affirmed its unwavering commitment to humanitarian principles and the safety of individuals, as demonstrated by its swift and effective response to the 'Global Sumud Flotilla' incident. Upon the flotilla's arrival in Crete on May 1, 2026, following an attack by Israeli forces, Greece immediately mobilized its resources to ensure the well-being of the 176 participants.

Under the coordination of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in close collaboration with the Hellenic Coast Guard, the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, and the Region of Crete, the operation ensured that all participants were safely disembarked. Thirty-one individuals received immediate medical attention at the General Hospital – Health Center of Sitia, while the rest were transferred to Heraklion Airport for their onward journeys, managed by their respective consular authorities.

This initiative underscores Greece's proactive role in international humanitarian efforts. The successful reception and facilitation of the flotilla members, even under exceptionally adverse conditions, highlights Greece's dedication to protecting those engaged in humanitarian missions.
