Greek Deputy Minister Faces Scrutiny Over 2007 Appointment Qualifications

A significant political storm is brewing in Greece concerning the qualifications of Makarios Lazaridis, the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food. The controversy centers on his 2007 appointment as a "special scientist," a position that, according to critics, he did not meet the formal requirements for. The opposition parties have seized upon this issue, accusing Lazaridis of deceiving the public and violating regulations that mandate specific educational and experience prerequisites for such roles. Even within the ruling New Democracy party, there are calls for clarification, with MP Stelios Petsas demanding a clear explanation from the Ministry of Education regarding the exact process of Lazaridis's hiring. PASOK has been particularly vocal, asserting that Lazaridis admitted to not having the necessary qualifications, suggesting that party affiliation ("blue" party credentials) was prioritized over merit. Lazaridis himself has attempted to quell the controversy, presenting his degree and stating he will not apologize for "life choices made 40 years ago."
