Guandu Temple Mazu Pilgrimage: Devotees 'Drill Sedan Chair' for Blessings

Taipei's vibrant cultural landscape was on full display today as the Guandu Temple, in conjunction with the Yu Nü Temple and Huang Di Temple, conducted its much-anticipated annual pilgrimage. This significant event saw throngs of devotees gather to honor Mazu, the sea goddess, and other deities, seeking their blessings for peace and good fortune.

The heart of the pilgrimage lies in the deeply spiritual "drilling the sedan chair" (鑽轎底) ritual. As the ornate sedan chair carrying Mazu's effigy made its way through the procession, worshippers knelt in reverence, creating a powerful visual of faith and devotion. This act is believed to bring blessings of safety and prosperity to their families and ensure all endeavors are successful.

Even a sudden downpour could not dampen the spirits of the participants. Dedicated staff ensured that the effigies of the deities' guardians, Qianliyan (Thousand-Mile Eye) and Shunfenger (Wind-Following Ear), as well as the generals Fan and Xie, were protected from the rain. Adding a touch of youthful enthusiasm, children, some dressed as their own versions of Qianliyan and Shunfenger, marched alongside the procession, embodying the continuation of tradition.

This annual event is more than just a religious ceremony; it is a cornerstone of community life in Taipei, reinforcing cultural identity and spiritual connection. The resilience shown by both the organizers and the devotees in the face of inclement weather highlights the deep-seated importance of this pilgrimage in the hearts of the people.
