GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV: Can it travel over 1,000km?

Can a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) comfortably transport six adults and luggage for a weekend getaway, potentially traveling over 1,000 kilometers on a single charge and tank of gas? This question was put to the test during a drive of the GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV from Kuala Lumpur to Lata Kertas in Dabong, Kelantan.

GWM claims the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV can exceed 1,000 km on a full tank and battery, based on NEDC calculations. The model has also gained attention with the appointment of Malaysian celebrity Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza as its official ambassador. To assess the MPV's real-world capabilities, the author embarked on a three-day, two-night trip with six adult passengers and their luggage.

The route included city streets, highways, federal roads, hilly terrain, and village paths. Despite the full load, the WEY G9 demonstrated impressive performance. The dashboard indicated an estimated 885 km range from gasoline and up to 147 km from a full electric charge. The vehicle's Hi4 PHEV system, combining a 1.5-liter turbo engine with two electric motors, produces a combined 442 PS and 642 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 5.7 seconds.

Overtaking heavy vehicles on the highway and navigating the hilly roads to Dabong were effortless, with smooth power delivery even under full load. Comfort emerged as a significant strength. The spacious cabin ensured passenger comfort, with the second-row seats featuring "Zero Gravity Seat" functions, massage, ventilation, fold-out tables, and built-in refrigerators, enhancing the long-distance travel experience. Even the third row offered adequate space for adults.

Noise insulation was also commendable, effectively reducing wind and tire noise to maintain a quiet cabin ambiance on the highway. Throughout the journey, passengers reported no complaints regarding seating space or comfort levels, underscoring the WEY G9's focus on a premium and relaxing travel experience.
