Gyeonggi Province launches survey on racial discrimination against residents with immigrant backgrounds

Gyeonggi Province is taking a crucial step towards fostering a more inclusive society by launching a comprehensive survey on the racial discrimination and human rights violations faced by its residents with immigrant backgrounds. This initiative, spearheaded by the Gyeonggi Immigration and Social Integration Support Center, is a direct response to the growing recognition of the challenges faced by foreigners and naturalized citizens living and working in the province.

As the first local government in South Korea to enact an ordinance specifically prohibiting racial discrimination and guaranteeing human rights for its immigrant population, Gyeonggi Province is setting a precedent. The survey, which will encompass long-term foreign residents and naturalized citizens aged 19 and over, will utilize literature reviews, surveys, in-depth interviews, and expert consultations to comprehensively analyze the lived experiences and structural factors contributing to discrimination.

The findings will be instrumental in developing practical policies, including a prevention and response manual, and educational programs to raise awareness. This proactive approach is particularly timely, given recent disturbing incidents of violence and abuse against migrant workers in Gyeonggi Province. The province's commitment to creating a sustainable, integrated society where all residents are respected is a testament to its forward-thinking governance.
