Hantavirus confirmed on MV Hondius cruise ship off Cape Verde coast

A concerning health situation is unfolding aboard the MV Hondius, currently anchored off the coast of Cape Verde, as a case of hantavirus has been confirmed. The vessel, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, carries 149 people, including two Irish nationals, and the company has implemented stringent isolation and hygiene measures.

The confirmation of hantavirus comes amid a series of tragic events on the ship. A passenger died on April 11, with the cause initially undetermined. Tragically, the passenger's wife, who had accompanied his body home, later died, with both confirmed as Dutch nationals. The connection to the current hantavirus situation was not immediately clear.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, a British passenger became critically ill and was medically evacuated to South Africa, where a variant of hantavirus was identified. This passenger remains in intensive care. Furthermore, a German passenger died on May 2, though the cause of death is yet to be established. Two crew members are also experiencing respiratory symptoms.

Health authorities have visited the ship and are assessing the situation. The timeline of events, from the initial passenger death to the hantavirus confirmation, is under scrutiny as officials work to understand the full scope of the outbreak and its potential links to the fatalities.
