The hantavirus responsible for the health crisis on board a cruise ship is a perfectly known and scientifically monitored virus, which has nothing to do with others, such as SARS-CoV-2 responsible for covid or the trigger for Ebola, and if the protocols are followed as planned, there is no reason for it to cause a major health alarm.

Sevilla stressed that the hantavirus responsible for the current situation is not comparable to the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic. A key differentiator is its transmission rate. While COVID-19 had a high R-value (around 5), indicating rapid spread, hantavirus's R-value is below 1. Furthermore, hantavirus transmission between humans is rare, with the 'Andes' strain being the only known exception, and even then, it requires close and prolonged contact, unlike the efficient airborne spread seen with coronaviruses.

It is a very well-known and monitored virus, and although I understand the social alarm it is causing due to the recent history of the COVID pandemic due to the coronavirus, I assert that it has absolutely nothing to do with it.

The protocols implemented on the cruise ship are designed to contain the virus effectively. Sevilla's assessment suggests that with these measures in place, the crisis should remain under control, with no significant risk of expansion beyond those directly affected. This contrasts sharply with the global, rapid spread experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, offering a measure of reassurance.
