HB Køge Reach Champions League for Second Time

HB Køge secured a place in the Champions League league phase for only the second time after a tense 1-1 draw with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night. The Danish champions advanced 2-1 on aggregate and celebrated a coveted place in European club football's top competition.

The decisive moment came just 49 seconds into the second half. Captain Mille Gejl drove forward before threading a superb pass to Sweden's Cassandra Korhonen, who calmly put HB Køge ahead. The home side had already missed several chances before the break, with Kyra Carusa twice failing to convert and Nadia Nadim also passing up a good opportunity.

Nadim appeared to have doubled the lead 10 minutes later, but the goal was disallowed because a Køge player in an offside position obstructed the goalkeeper's view. PSV were handed a route back into the match in the 63rd minute, when a weak effort slipped through the arms and legs of HB Køge goalkeeper Alberte Vingum.

The mistake restored the tension, and HB Køge also struggled to make the most of counterattacking chances. Nevertheless, the team held on and eventually burst into celebration. Denmark coach Jakob Michelsen watched from among the 1,195 spectators in Køge, including the difficult moment for his reserve goalkeeper.

Eighteen teams will compete in the Champions League league phase. HB Køge will play six matches while chasing one of the 12 places in the knockout phase. The club's previous appearance came in 2021, when it lost all six group games with a combined score of 2-22. The competition has since adopted a new format.
