Heavy Traffic on Inter-American Highway as Panamanians Head Interior for Long Weekend

Panama is experiencing significant travel disruptions as citizens head to the interior for the long Labor Day weekend. The Inter-American Highway, a vital artery, is choked with traffic, particularly in the western provinces of Panama Oeste. Drivers face extensive delays in districts like Capira and Chorrera, as thousands embark on journeys to escape the city.

The holiday exodus, beginning Friday, May 1st, has been compounded by a traffic accident in El Nazareno, Chorrera. This incident, occurring early in the day, has further snarled the already dense flow of vehicles. Authorities are urging motorists to plan their routes carefully and exercise patience.

In addition to the holiday travel, the National Police have been active in enforcing traffic laws. Over the past 24 hours, hundreds of citations have been issued for various infractions, including speeding, improper use of lights, and driving under the influence. Forty-two vehicles were also towed for obstructing traffic or parking violations. This heightened enforcement aims to ensure safety amidst the increased volume of vehicles on the road.
