IICA Drives Tropical Agriculture Transformation Across the Americas

The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) is spearheading a crucial initiative to transform and elevate tropical agriculture across Latin America. Recognizing the immense potential and unique challenges of this vital sector, IICA, in collaboration with public and private leaders, has outlined a comprehensive agenda for 2026-2030. This forward-thinking strategy prioritizes sustainable productivity, climate resilience, and technological innovation, aiming to unlock the full potential of tropical farming systems. The commitment to a hemispheric vision of cooperation is key, acknowledging that shared challenges require unified solutions. The agenda boasts an ambitious portfolio of nearly 200 projects, addressing critical areas such as soil restoration, regenerative production, bio-inputs, water resource management, genetic improvement, and nature-based solutions. This holistic approach underscores the understanding that agricultural transformation must be integrated and systemic. IICA Director General Muhammad Ibrahim emphasized that 'sustainable transformation of the tropics cannot wait,' highlighting the urgency of aligning public policies, fostering investments, and bridging scientific knowledge with local expertise. The emphasis on increasing public spending for innovation ecosystems, strengthening agricultural extension services, and enhancing seed systems is particularly important for ensuring food security and climate resilience in the region. This initiative, co-organized with the Government of Chiapas and CATIE, positions Mexico and the broader Latin American and Caribbean region at the forefront of sustainable agricultural development, leveraging its rich biological and cultural diversity to address pressing environmental and socioeconomic challenges.
