Indonesia accelerates EV charging station rollout to support electric vehicle growth

Indonesia is speeding up the expansion of its public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, known as SPKLUs, to match the country's growing EV adoption. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is fostering cross-stakeholder collaboration to drive this development.

Wahyudi Joko Santoso, Coordinator for Smart Grid, Electric Charging, and Storage Development, stated that the development of SPKLUs opens avenues for various business models, which is expected to boost business participation and accelerate infrastructure deployment. The government has issued Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Decree No. 24.K/TL.01/MEM.L/2025, establishing a foundational roadmap for public EV charging infrastructure development across Indonesia from 2025 to 2030.

This decree aims to accelerate the deployment of charging stations, considering factors like location distribution and the types of charger technology. The plan includes installing charging stations in a wide array of public spaces, such as shopping centers, office complexes, industrial zones, highway rest areas, gas stations, tourist spots, hospitals, train stations, bus terminals, hotels, and seaports.

Furthermore, the government is actively streamlining business licensing for charging station operators to simplify the process for companies looking to build EV charging infrastructure. This initiative is a key step in fast-tracking the growth of Indonesia's EV ecosystem. Evidence of this rapid growth is seen in the electricity consumption figures for public charging stations, which reached 62.4 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) by June 2026. This amount already exceeds the total consumption of 48.5 million kWh recorded for the entirety of 2025.
